Wilderness Walks

Keen walkers and hikers will find our coastline and lush mountain ranges a natural playground. Opportunities abound for everything from an easy stroll to full-day trek. Regardless of the length of your journey, you’ll find stunning scenery, unspoilt landscapes and a sense of freedom. Walking Trail Brochures are available from our office. Below, we’ve listed just a few of our favourites:

 Wreck of the Hydrabad
The Hydrabad ran aground on Waitatere Beach in 1878, and a 1 kilometre walk along this beautiful beach will bring you to her sandy graveyard. The wreck is still visible.

Lake PapaitongaTake this 20 minute stroll through mature forest and cross a wetland boardwalk. There were many Maori battles fought here, and interpretation boards along the way share the fascinating stories.

Otaki ForksThe Otaki Forks offers 6 walks from 40 minutes to 6 hours. The 45 minute Arcus Loop crosses river terraces, streams and gullies. The Sheridan Creek track crosses the Waiotauru River and follows the Sheridan Creek upstream, passing through bush and finally arriving to an old log hauler. (3 hours return trip).

Waikanae Estuary Reserve & Waikanae River Walkway
Explore the Waikanae Estuary, which attracts more bird species than anywhere else on the Wellington Coast. The Waikanae River Walkway has two sections (South Bank and North Bank) or you can take a round trip.

 Mangaone Walkway
This stunning 3-hour journey includes rolling farmland, lush native bush and beautiful river landscapes. There are also panoramic views of Kapiti Island.
